Remedies: Supplements

List One details the supplements I took as part of My Psoriasis Journey. When a flare-up occurred, further research led to me revising it into List Two.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with any of these brands/retailers. I am not an 'influencer' and only wish to share the products I have used in my natural healing process. While a lot of the research I have done suggests that the below supplements can help reduce psoriasis symptoms, the combination of them should not be considered a guaranteed cure. Always speak to a pharmacist/nutritionist before beginning to take supplements (I asked for advice at 2 chemists and both gave me the go ahead with List One).

Overdosing on vitamins is possible. If taken in line with the 'Directions' or 'Suggested use' detailed on each product's label, none of these will result in excessive intakes. The NHS website provides information on recommended daily doses of vitamins/minerals.

LIST ONE

Magnesium Citrate
(Average price: ~£6 / 180 pills)

Marine Collagen
(Average price: ~£9 / 90 tablets)

Milk Thistle Tincture
(Average price: ~£11 / 100ml)

Multi-Strain Biotic
(Average price: ~£30 / 475ml)

Vitamin D3 & K2

Due to cheap prices and fast delivery, I defaulted to Amazon for these supplements. However, multiple articles and reviews alerted me to the fact that there are companies on the platform selling counterfeits. Advice online suggests to avoid any supplements made in China, and to look for listing that are 'sold and shipped by Amazon'. Another way to check a business' authenticity is to search for them on Trustpilot.

With this in mind, I went back through my orders and wrote down every different supplier...

...this was a real eye-opener! Natures Aid was the only one with products 'sold and shipped by Amazon'. I entered each one into Trustpilot, too: other than the ones in bold, they either had barely any reviews or did not appear at all. Their names remind me of the copycat/ghost brands seen in discount shops. Should we be trusting them with manufacturing supplements to support our bodies? I don't think so! Here's a table containing several reputable brands:

Consequently, I made sure to use these ones to source the below:

LIST TWO
Acidophilus
(Latest findings: an acidophilus formation should also contain Bifidobacteria)
A close-up of several strains of green-coloured bacteria.

Allicin
(A new addition, allicin is a compound found in garlic that has multiple health benefits)

Astaxanthin
(Removed as it can be obtained naturally by eating salmon)

Collagen
(Removed as many reliable sources reject the supposed efficacy of collagen supplements benefitting the skin directly. Foods that boost collagen naturally include broccoli, cashews, leafy greens, legumes and sardines)

Cranberry Extract
(Latest findings: Akkermansia Muciniphila is a bacteria that may benefit those of us with psoriasis. A natural way to boost its levels is through Cranberry Extract)
A close-up of several strains of Akkermansia Muciniphila.

Grapeseed Extract
(Latest findings: it's believed that proanthocyanidins could alleviate psoriasis symptoms, and they're found in grape seeds)

L-Glutamine
(Removed as many sites say that the body produces enough on its own. Foods high in glutamine include fish, red cabbage, nuts and leafy greens)

Magnesium
(Latest findings: it's required to 'activate' Vitamin D. Avoid taking too much over the daily recommended intake. The most absorbable forms are Citrate and Glycinate; the latter is supposedly more useful for inflammatory conditions)
Yellow Magnesium Mg chemical symbol in a black background.

Milk Thistle Tincture
(Removed due to cost)

Multi-Strain Biotic
(Hanna Sillitoe)
A brown glass bottle with a white lid. Its white label, covered in colourful flower imagery, has text reading: “Hanna Sillitoe Multi Strain Biotic”.

Mushroom Complex
(Latest findings: having read about the multitude of health benefits associated with mushrooms, I wanted to include a supplement of them. Extracts tend to be more potent than powders.)
Chart showing different mushroom extracts.

Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules
(Research suggests omega oil is better absorbed as a liquid)

Omega 3-6-9 Blend
(Removed as 6 can be easily obtained through the diet and 9 is made in the body)
Black text against a blue background reading: “Organic Omega 3-6-9 Optimum Oil Blend”.

Selenium
(Removed as the daily recommended intake can be obtained naturally by eating a single Brazil nut!)

Vitamin C
(Removed soon after adding as 1 serving of broccoli, kale, blackcurrants or kiwi provides more than the daily recommended intake of 40mg. Our bodies can't store Vitamin C as it's water-soluble, so this intake is required every day)

Vitamin D3 & K2
(Latest findings: both are fat-soluble, so best taken in the form of oil-filled capsules. Daily recommended intake 400-1,000 IU. More info on Vitamin D here)
A yellow capsule held between two fingers, held up to the sun.

Zinc
(Latest findings: after reading Jason Vale's Skin Deep Plan, I upped my intake from 25mg to 50mg. My daily recommended intake is only 9.5mg, and numerous sources advise no more than 40mg a day. So, after one month, I have gone back down to 15mg. It's suggested that gluconate is the best form)
